Iraqi Teen Passes Away After Medical Emergency on Flight to China
An Iraqi teenager on an Iraqi Airways flight from Baghdad to Guangzhou tragically passed away after the plane made an emergency landing at Kolkata Airport due to her sudden illness. Despite immediate medical assistance, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital, prompting police to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death and to coordinate with the Iraqi Embassy regarding repatriation of her remains.
An Iraqi Airways flight en route from Baghdad to Guangzhou encountered a significant medical emergency as it was forced to make an emergency landing at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The situation arose when a 16-year-old passenger, Deran Samir Ahmed, experienced a sudden health crisis approximately thirty minutes prior to landing on Wednesday night, as reported by airport officials. Upon emergency landing at approximately 10:18 PM, a medical team promptly provided assistance to the teenager, but upon evaluation, she was found to have no pulse and demonstrated no signs of life. Subsequently, she was referred to a nearby private hospital for further examination. Unfortunately, the hospital confirmed that the young girl was declared “brought dead” upon arrival. Following formalities, Deran, alongside two accompanying passengers, was transported to Charnock Hospital by ambulance at around 1:18 AM. The medical team and authorities at the facility facilitated the subsequent handling of the situation, and officers from the Baguiati Police have initiated a case of unnatural death based on the medical report from the attending physician. The young girl’s body was subsequently claimed by the police for necessary procedures, including a postmortem examination. Police sources indicated that her remains will be returned to her family after compliance with proper legal processes, including the provision of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the NSCBI police station. Additionally, airport officials have planned to liaise with the Iraqi Embassy in New Delhi regarding the situation. Complicating matters was the language barrier, as the teenager’s relatives were reportedly unable to communicate effectively in English, leading to challenges in managing the logistics surrounding this tragic incident.
This incident highlights the risks associated with international travel, particularly for young individuals who may be travelling alone or with limited language proficiency. It raises awareness about the protocols in place at airports for medical emergencies and the legal procedures that follow such unfortunate events, including the response of healthcare facilities and law enforcement agencies.
The tragic death of a young Iraqi passenger aboard an international flight underscores the vulnerabilities faced during travel and the importance of immediate medical response. Authorities have begun necessary legal procedures to support the victim’s family while maintaining essential communication with diplomatic channels. Such incidents serve as solemn reminders of the unpredictability of health emergencies, especially in transit.
