In September, trade valued at $381.68 million showed a 37.73% increase year-on-year, with Cambodian exports rising by 55.9%.
As reported in 2023, Thailand has emerged as Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, with a trading volume of $3.169 billion recorded between January and September. This represents a 12.4% increase from the previous year. While Cambodia’s exports to Thailand reached $645.5 million—reflecting a slight decrease of 1%—the imports surged to $2.523 billion, marking a significant 16.4% increase. This imbalance has resulted in a trade deficit for Cambodia, which grew to $1.878 billion, compared to $1.515 billion in the previous year. In September 2023 alone, bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand was valued at $381.68 million, an impressive year-on-year increase of 37.73%. During this month, Cambodian exports to Thailand rose sharply by 55.9%, totaling $74 million, while imports also saw notable growth of 34%, reaching $307.68 million. Key exports from Cambodia to Thailand consist of agricultural products such as mangoes, cassava, corn, pepper, and beans. On the other hand, Thai imports include construction materials, electrical equipment, and agricultural machinery. However, Cambodian farmers face challenges due to stricter Thai import regulations that are enforced during the harvest seasons, which can complicate trade conditions.
Cambodia and Thailand have established a significant trading relationship, with Thailand being one of its top trading partners. The General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) reports ongoing growth in trade, driven mainly by agricultural exports from Cambodia. The substantial volume of imports from Thailand, primarily consisting of essential machinery and materials, underscores the reliance of the Cambodian market on its neighbor. Despite the potential for growth and stronger ties, the trade relationship is not without challenges, particularly concerning regulatory hurdles that can impact the agricultural sector. Thai restrictions on imports are often implemented to manage domestic market demands and stabilize prices, affecting Cambodian exporters.
The trade relationship between Cambodia and Thailand demonstrates remarkable growth, characterized by increasing bilateral trade volumes alongside a persistent trade deficit for Cambodia. The success of exports like mangoes and cassava illustrates Cambodia’s agricultural strengths, whereas the rise in imports highlights its dependence on Thai construction and electrical sectors. Challenges remain, particularly in the context of import restrictions affecting agricultural goods, but the overall trend shows a resilient and expanding economic partnership.
