In an exclusive interview with Olympics.com, esteemed table tennis player and six-time Olympic gold medalist Ma Long has expressed his intention to remain active in the sport despite announcing his retirement from major international competitions. Following a triumphant conclusion to his career with a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he successfully led the Chinese men’s team to victory, Ma reflected on his ongoing passion for the game. Although marking the Paris Olympics as the end of his competitive journey, he stated, “I consider the Paris Olympics to be the final stop in my career, so I’m very happy to end it on such a perfect note.” Yet, during recent discussions at the ANOC Awards in Cascais, Portugal, Ma elucidated that he is not ready to permanently retire. He emphasized, “One day when I actually choose to stop playing… I will tell everyone. But not now; you will still have chances to see me on court.” At 36 years old, Ma admitted that the past few years have been filled with uncertainties, particularly after his remarkable achievements at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics held in 2021, where he secured gold in both the men’s singles and team events. He shared his internal struggles, reflecting, “This cycle was the first time I had a lot of hesitation, or doubts, or confusion over whether I would participate at the Olympic Games.” It was not until a pivotal victory at the ITTF Men’s World Cup that he regained his confidence and secured a spot on the team for the Paris Games. With a competitive career spanning over 15 years, Ma fondly recalled his first Olympic experience at London 2012, which remains the most significant tournament for him. He noted, “The Olympics were different from other tournaments… because regardless of whether one enjoys sports, everyone watches the Olympics.” More recently, after winning gold in Paris, he participated in the WTT China Smash in Beijing, an event made special as it was the first time his children witnessed him play live. Concerning his future, Ma Long has not dismissed the idea of coaching but indicated a preference for a quieter life post-retirement. He stated, “I probably prefer a feeling that is blander, calmer.” He aims to enjoy the present as he navigates his aspirations while acknowledging that time passes swiftly.

Ma Long is widely recognized as one of the greatest table tennis players, having accumulated an impressive record of achievements, including six Olympic gold medals. His career reflects a combination of triumph and resilience, as he has faced periods of uncertainty and self-doubt, especially in the lead-up to the most recent Olympic Games. Following a historic performance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Ma’s perspective on competition has evolved as he prepares for the next chapter of his life, balancing his passion for table tennis with personal responsibilities and aspirations post-retirement.

Ma Long remains a prominent figure in table tennis, illustrating that even the most accomplished athletes can experience uncertainty regarding their future. With his commitment to continue playing and his desire to savor the present, Ma’s journey reflects both his legendary status and the personal challenges that come with the pursuit of excellence.
