The railway has successfully facilitated the transport of over 43 million passengers and 48.3 million tonnes of cargo since its operational debut on December 3, 2021. Spanning 1,035 kilometers, the railway connects Kunming, China, to Vientiane, Laos, and is a cornerstone of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Significantly, the railway has improved regional connectivity, fostering increased interactions between populations. Monthly passenger trips rose dramatically from 600,000 at launch to over 1.6 million presently. Furthermore, the daily cross-border freight train services surged from two to eighteen, with the types of goods transported expanding from 500 to over 3,000.

Since its inception, the railway has managed to transport over 10.6 million tonnes of goods, with a total trade value surpassing 44 billion yuan (approximately $6.11 billion). This infrastructure has notably bolstered Laos’ international trade and economic exchanges by enhancing logistics efficiency, reducing freight costs within the nation by 20 to 40 percent.

The China-Laos Railway is an integral project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to enhance connectivity and economic collaboration across Asia.
