Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics, announced the proud inclusion of this collection, stating, “Keeping our Olympic collection up to date, we are proud today to be announcing donations from a trio of Paris 2024 medallists: Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Thea LaFond and Neeraj Chopra.” Neeraj secured a silver medal with his throw of 89.45 meters, narrowly finishing behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who set a new Olympic record with a remarkable 92.97 meters.
Chopra’s iconic javelin from his Tokyo Olympic victory is already preserved in the Olympic Museum located in Lausanne, Switzerland. Additionally, fellow Paris 2024 medalists have also contributed significant items. Yaroslava Mahuchikh donated her singlet, name bib, and shorts after breaking the world high jump record, whereas Thea LaFond, Dominica’s inaugural Olympic medallist, contributed the crop top worn during her victorious triple jump competition.
In total, the World Athletics Heritage Collection added 32 artefacts from 23 athletes representing 12 different nations this week, further enriching its compilation of athletics history. Notably, historic memorabilia from legendary athletes including Wyomia Tyus, a two-time women’s 100-meter Olympic champion from the USA, Billy Mills, the Tokyo 1964 10,000m champion, and Allan Wells, who won the 100m gold at the Moscow 1980 Olympics, were incorporated this year as well.
