On Thursday, the Chinese Coast Guard reported that it expelled a Philippine aircraft identified as a C-208 from the airspace over Scarborough Shoal, referred to as Huangyan Island in China. The coastguard spokesman, Liu Dejun, stated that the plane had unlawfully entered Chinese airspace, prompting the coastguard to closely monitor and subsequently warn and remove the aircraft in accordance with international law. This region has historically been a hotspot for tension between China and the Philippines due to overlapping territorial claims.

Scarborough Shoal remains under Chinese control yet is claimed by the Philippines, leading to numerous confrontations between the two nations. Liu asserted, “Huangyan Island is China’s inherent territory, and the actions of the Philippine side severely infringe upon China’s sovereignty and pose high risks of maritime and air incidents.” Such incidents illustrate the ongoing complexities in the South China Sea, where both countries maintain strong positions over disputed territories.
