DHAKA, Dec 29, 2024 (BSS) – Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mohd Shuhada Othman, held a meeting with Chief Adviser’s Special Envoy on International Affairs, Lutfey Siddiqi, at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. The discussion centered on enhancing Bangladesh-Malaysia relations across various sectors, covering bilateral, regional, and international matters of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the Special Envoy highlighted the significance of the friendship that has developed over the last 53 years, recalling the recent visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Anwar Ibrahim to Bangladesh on October 4, 2024, which marked an important step in strengthening bilateral ties.

Lutfey Siddiqi provided an overview of Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic reform initiatives post-July-August Revolution. The Malaysian envoy underscored the potential for enhanced trade and economic cooperation, suggesting proactive collaboration in new sectors including manpower mobility, reduction of processing costs, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data science.

Both representatives acknowledged the necessity for cooperation in key areas such as SMEs, healthcare, education, and disaster management. In addition, Siddiqi expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship and support for Bangladesh’s aspiration to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN.

The two also discussed the Malaysian Government’s commitment to allow entry for approximately 18,000 Bangladeshi workers who faced entry bans before May 31, 2024, calling for expeditious resolutions to these concerns. They jointly addressed corruption issues tied to recruitment syndicates affecting workers’ welfare, aiming to safeguard the interests of both nations.

Moreover, the Special Envoy proposed the establishment of a dedicated ‘Economic Zone’ in Bangladesh for Malaysian investors, similar to those set up for other nations, to capitalize on Bangladesh’s strategic position within the Asia-Pacific region. Othman assured his commitment to furthering Malaysia-Bangladesh ties, expressing gratitude for the support extended to him during his tenure.

The diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Bangladesh have evolved significantly since their establishment over five decades ago. As both countries seek to bolster their economic and cultural ties, recent visits by high-ranking officials have opened doors to discussions on trade, workforce mobility, and strategic partnerships.
