Strengthening Health Ties: China’s Partnership with Djibouti Through TCM
China is increasing health cooperation with Djibouti through traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) initiatives, focusing on establishing a TCM center and training health workers to address various health issues, including dengue fever and injuries from accidents. Djibouti’s Health Minister emphasizes the importance of TCM in modern healthcare, bolstering the bilateral relationship.
China has significantly strengthened its public health collaborations with Djibouti, a vital African ally, particularly focusing on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Following successful interventions resulting in 17,000 cataract surgeries, the partnership is now pivoting towards addressing challenges such as nerve paralysis, traffic accident injuries, and combating lesser-known mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever. Plans are underway to establish Djibouti’s inaugural TCM center, emphasizing the nation’s growing reliance on ancient Chinese medical practices.
The Djiboutian Health Minister, Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh—proponent of TCM and a medical doctor—has expressed his commitment to advancing Chinese traditional medicine within Djibouti. This statement was made during discussions in Beijing with the director of China’s National Health Commission at a World Health Organization TCM conference. Minister Abdilleh has assumed the role of ambassador for TCM, indicating strong bilateral intentions to enhance public health in the region.
In further efforts to promote TCM, China aims to train 1,300 health professionals overseas within the next three years, focusing particularly on Belt and Road Initiative partners. This strategy underscores China’s ambition to popularize its health therapies, including acupuncture, massage, and cupping, as solid components of global healthcare.
Moreover, dedicated medical teams from mainland China have been deployed in Djibouti for several years, functioning alongside the GX Foundation, a Hong Kong nonprofit organization. Recently, its founder, Leung Chun-ying, along with the medical teams, engaged with Minister Abdilleh to discuss the positive impacts and applications of TCM, thereby enhancing cooperation and health outcomes for Djibouti’s population.
The relationship between China and Djibouti is deeply rooted in strategic collaboration, particularly in the fields of defense and health. Djibouti hosts China’s only overseas military base, highlighting its geopolitical importance. The recent focus on traditional Chinese medicine signals a broader trend in international health partnerships, where alternative and complementary medicine is gaining traction alongside conventional medical practices. This move aims to enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency in Djibouti, a nation facing various health challenges.
In summary, China’s enhanced health partnership with Djibouti marks a significant evolution towards integrating traditional Chinese medicine in addressing the health challenges faced by the nation. With ambitious plans for establishing a TCM center and training a new generation of health professionals, the collaboration not only aims to improve healthcare outcomes but also to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two countries through cultural and medical exchange.
