Tsunoda Secures Sixth Grand Slam Title at Baku Competition
Olympic Champion Tsunoda won in Baku, defeating Mio Huh and Lois Petit to secure a spot in the final. In an intense match against Tara Babulfath, she overcame initial penalties to claim her sixth grand slam title. Bronze medals went to Eva Perez Soler and Andrea Stojadinov after competitive contests.
In an important competition for Olympic Champion Tsunoda, she showcased her skills in Baku. After a cautious start against Mio Huh (KOR), Tsunoda gained momentum with her powerful tomoe-nage followed by a swift armlock, securing her first victory. She continued her strong performance in the next round against Lois Petit (BEL), triumphing again to reach the final.
Maria Celia Laborde, a seasoned world medallist from 2014, aimed for a successful outing but faced a disappointing defeat in the first round against Eva Perez Soler (ESP). Despite being a seeded judoka, Laborde was eliminated early, allowing Soler to advance to the quarter-finals against Andrea Stojadinov (SRB).
In pool C, the spotlight was on Tara Babulfath (SWE), who has an impressive track record with both world and Olympic medals. Demonstrating her expertise, she won her first match by waza-ari against Laziza Haydarova (UZB) and continued to eliminate her competition, ultimately setting the stage for a final showdown with Tsunoda.
The final match began with Tsunoda executing a tomoe-nage, which Babulfath anticipated. However, Tsunoda’s lack of preparation for subsequent attacks led to quick penalties for false attacks. Conversely, Babulfath also faced penalties for her defensive strategies. Dominating with her powerful left arm, Tsunoda ultimately forced Babulfath to concede a third penalty, securing her sixth grand slam title.
The first bronze medal contest featured Eva Perez Soler (ESP) versus Tugce Beder (TUR), who had lost to Babulfath in the semi-finals. After a tied regulation time, Soler managed to secure victory during golden score with a circular sumi-gaeshi maneuver. In the second bronze contest, Giulia Ghiglione (ITA) faced Andrea Stojadinov (SRB), who delivered a waza-ari winning throw shortly before the match ended, earning her the bronze medal.
In conclusion, Olympic Champion Tsunoda achieved a remarkable victory at the Baku competition, solidifying her status with a sixth grand slam title. Despite challenges during the final, her skill and resilience prevailed over competitor Babulfath. Eva Perez Soler and Andrea Stojadinov successfully claimed bronze medals, highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament.
