The IOC is set to award Ana Barbosu the bronze medal for floor exercise at Paris 2024 following a reassessment of scores. USA Gymnastics has contested the ruling regarding Jordan Chiles’ score, seeking reinstatement of her original competitive score. In response to the situation, Chiles has decided to take a break from social media for her mental health.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is currently engaged in discussions to arrange a reallocation ceremony for the bronze medal in the floor exercise for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This medal is set to be awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. The IOC has confirmed that they are liaising with the Romanian National Olympic Committee regarding the ceremony, as well as coordinating with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to facilitate the return of the bronze medal.
On the same day, USA Gymnastics announced that it has submitted a formal letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) challenging a recent ruling that deemed their inquiry into upgrading Jordan Chiles’ score invalid. They are seeking a revision of each ruling to reinstate Chiles’ original score of 13.766, which had placed her among the medal winners. The initial score given to Chiles was 13.666, where she finished fifth behind multiple prominent gymnasts.
The situation surrounding the floor exercise bronze medal has sparked controversy, particularly concerning the timing and validity of score inquiries. As the IOC prepares to honor Ana Barbosu with the reallocated medal, the ongoing dispute involving Jordan Chiles continues to unfold, highlighting the complexities and emotional toll of competitive gymnastics. Chiles has chosen to withdraw from social media to protect her mental health amidst ongoing attacks.
