Colombia Attracts Global Interest in Offshore Wind Energy Auction
Colombia’s first offshore wind energy auction has attracted global corporations, including firms from Belgium, the UK, China, and Spain. Colombia has announced its inaugural offshore wind energy auction, which has garnered interest from international corporations eager to develop 69 offshore locations. This initiative was disclosed by the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) and is part of President Gustavo Petro’s objectives to diversify Colombia’s energy portfolio and reduce dependence on traditional fossil fuels like oil and coal.
The list of interested entities includes firms from Belgium, the United Kingdom, China, and Spain, in addition to local companies such as Ecopetrol. Following the viability assessments of their proposals, successful applicants will be able to bid on preferred areas, with each potentially securing two projects.
The auction aims to establish a minimum capacity of 1 gigawatt through awarded projects, each expected to deliver no less than 200 megawatts. The comprehensive plan set forth by President Petro envisions achieving an impressive offshore wind capacity of 7 gigawatts by 2040.
