The Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration has announced a restructured board comprising international and Saudi experts, appointed for a term until February 2028. The board aims to enhance the center’s role in the MENA region. The center also expanded its advisory committee to include 16 professionals dedicated to refining its arbitration processes and aligning with global practices.

On Thursday, the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA) announced that a royal decree has restructured its board of directors for its fourth session. This new board consists of a combination of international and Saudi specialists in the domains of arbitration, law, and business, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.

The newly appointed board’s tenure extends until February 2028, with a primary concentration on advancing the SCCA’s status as a preeminent arbitration institution within the Middle East and North Africa region. The board operates independently from governmental influence and is tasked with guiding the center’s strategy, policies, and procedures while maintaining neutrality in arbitration management.

Walid bin Suleiman Abanmi has been designated as the chairman, alongside British barrister Toby Landau, who serves as vice chairman. Other distinguished members of the board include Prof. George Afaki (France), Abi Smutny Cohen (United States), Muhammad Abdul Raouf Muhammad (Egypt), and several notable Saudi members, among others.

Additionally, the center has broadened its Rules Advisory Committee, which has now been renamed the International Advisory Committee. This new committee comprises 16 arbitration professionals, including independent international arbitrators and legal experts proficient in prominent arbitration institutions, which aim to provide technical assistance and monitor global trends in arbitration practices.

Chairman Abanmi expressed gratitude towards the Saudi leadership for their unwavering support, remarking that, “This formation supports and enables the center in achieving its ambitious new vision: to be the preferred choice for alternative dispute resolution in the MENA region and one of the leading arbitration centers in the world by 2030.” He reiterated the center’s pledge to uphold operational independence and impartiality in proceedings.

Hamed bin Hassan Mira, Chief Executive Officer of SCCA, spotlighted the strategic significance of the new board’s composition, stating, “The inclusion of high-level international competencies will significantly contribute to the center’s growth on both local and global fronts. The International Advisory Committee will not only ensure alignment with best global practices but also serve as a driving force in refining procedural rules and enhancing service offerings.”
