China and Botswana Formalize Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement

On February 27, 2025, in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, China and Botswana formalized an agreement on economic and technical cooperation. The ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, Fan Yong, who stated that the longstanding friendship between the two nations has resulted in fruitful collaborations. He emphasized that the enactment of this agreement, alongside initiatives from the 2024 Beijing Summit on China-Africa Cooperation, will enhance multifaceted cooperation between China and Botswana.

Botswanan Vice President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba Gaolathe, commended China’s significant achievements and expressed gratitude for China’s enduring support to Botswana. He conveyed a strong belief that the forthcoming cooperation would positively impact Botswana’s economic growth and improve the welfare of its citizens.

Official statistics indicate a notable growth in bilateral trade between China and Botswana, which reached 710 million U.S. dollars in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 15.7 percent. In the first half of 2024, trade further rose to 419 million U.S. dollars, reflecting a 12.5 percent growth compared to the previous year.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Botswana, established on January 6, 1975. Furthermore, the relationship was upgraded to a strategic partnership in September 2024, underscoring the commitment of both nations to strengthen their ties and partnership.
