New Delhi reports that China has significantly augmented its presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) over recent decades, deploying 6-8 ships from the People’s Liberation Army Navy at any given time. However, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of Navy Staff, asserts that India possesses the capability to monitor these activities effectively, stating that knowing “who goes where” constitutes a substantial advantage.

Admiral Tripathi addressed the attendees of The Chanakya Dialogues conclave themed ‘Bharat 2047: Aatmanirbhar in War’, emphasizing that the Indian Navy has maintained vigilance against Chinese encroachment. He confirmed that China’s assertions regarding its naval presence being linked to anti-piracy operations are outdated, highlighting that India has resisted allowing Chinese forces into its designated maritime spaces.

The Indian Navy utilizes both advanced manned and unmanned technologies, complemented by space-based monitoring tools and international collaborations, to maintain robust maritime domain awareness. Admiral Tripathi underscored that such efforts enable India to stay informed about foreign naval activities, thereby enhancing national security.

Additionally, the Navy Chief noted the activities of Chinese research vessels and deep-sea fishing operations, reiterating that while some of these actions may violate maritime norms, India is prepared to mitigate any adverse effects. He stated, “We have not allowed them to come anywhere where we don’t want them to come.”

He expressed concern regarding the long-standing maritime collaboration between China and Pakistan, mentioning that since 2009, China has supplied Pakistan with various naval assets, including frigates and tracking vessels. The recent agreement for additional submarines underscores the ongoing military partnership, which poses a potential threat to India’s maritime interests.

Admiral Tripathi concluded by reaffirming India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime security and maintaining a strategic advantage over maritime collusion between China and Pakistan. He stated, “We are certainly aware of the threat which the submarines can pose to our maritime security and trade…”
