Angola’s Agogo FPSO: A Revolutionary Step in Carbon Capture Technology

Angola is launching the world’s first ship-based carbon capture FPSO, the Agogo, built by Cosco Shipping. Set to operate offshore Angola, it will produce 120,000 barrels of oil daily and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. The vessel incorporates advanced CCS technology and represents a major milestone in decarbonizing offshore oil production.

Angola is poised to become a pioneer in carbon capture technology with the launch of the world’s first ship-based ‘marine factory’ for CO₂ capture, named the Agogo FPSO. Built by Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry in Shanghai, this floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) incorporates cutting-edge carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The Agogo FPSO, transformed from a 320,000-dwt ultra-large crude oil carrier, is set to operate offshore Angola in the Block 15/06 West Hub area, located approximately 180 km offshore, at depths of 1,650 meters.

The FPSO is operated by Azule Energy, a collaboration between bp and Eni in Angola, and is expected to produce 120,000 barrels of oil per day, with a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels. The Agogo FPSO will function under a 15-year firm charter, which includes an option for a five-year extension, with a total contract value nearing US$5.3 billion. Cosco Shipping highlights the vessel as one of the most environmentally friendly FPSOs globally, having significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions while docked in Shanghai.

The Agogo FPSO’s innovative technology allows for capturing CO₂ from the exhaust of onboard gas turbines, leading to an estimated 27% reduction in carbon emissions. This technological advancement represents a crucial step towards achieving zero-carbon operations in the FPSO sector. The vessel also incorporates various emission-reduction technologies, bolstering operational efficiency while reducing overall carbon emissions by approximately 230,000 tons annually.

With over 15,000 tons of upper module lifting and more than 100,000 meters of cable installation completed ahead of schedule, the Agogo FPSO sets a new global standard for FPSO retrofitting efficiency.
