The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) intends to enhance its strategic and diplomatic relations with China if elected to power, as stated by senior leader Abul Moyeen Khan during a meeting with leaders from Yunnan Province. Khan emphasized the need for Bangladesh to balance its geopolitical position, considering its geographic encirclement by larger nations, saying, “It’s simple that we are in a geographical position where, on three sides, we are encircled by a big and powerful country.”

Khan extended greetings on behalf of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the Communist Party of China and Yunnan’s leaders. He highlighted Zia’s long-standing friendship with China and reaffirmed the commitment of the BNP to strengthen ties upon winning the upcoming national election. He stated, “This is a commitment from BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.”

During the meeting, Khan acknowledged the demographic pressures Bangladesh faces, given its population size compared to Yunnan. He stressed Bangladesh’s agricultural base and its industrial aspirations, particularly in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. He called on Chinese officials to support agricultural and financial collaborations, referencing the Chinese Ambassador’s offer of assistance for a water management project along the Teesta River.

Moyeen pointed out the strategic significance of Yunnan as a gateway for enhancing Bangladesh-China trade and commerce. He emphasized the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), expressing eagerness for its progress, particularly in connecting Bangladesh with China through Myanmar. He highlighted, “We are eagerly waiting for the initiation and completion of this segment of the BRI.”

Vice Governor Xu Hao of Yunnan responded positively to the BNP’s messages, affirming that China regards Bangladesh as a vital partner. He indicated that Yunnan is prepared to support sectors such as renewable energy and agriculture. Furthermore, he mentioned that Yunnan will provide dedicated healthcare services for Bangladeshi patients and attract more Bangladeshi students to its universities, offering scholarships and opportunities for professional growth.
