Lula Invites Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay to Upcoming BRICS Summit
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva invited Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay to the BRICS summit in July in Rio de Janeiro. The summit aims to reduce reliance on the US dollar and promote local currencies in transactions. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has extended invitations to Mexico, Colombia, and Uruguay to attend the forthcoming BRICS summit, scheduled for July in Rio de Janeiro. The BRICS bloc, comprising Brazil, China, and India, encompasses 40% of the global population and aims to focus on reducing reliance on the US dollar while promoting local currencies for international transactions.
During his visit to Montevideo for the inauguration of Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, Lula emphasized the significance of including additional countries to fortify multilateralism and enhance international trade. The summit’s agenda seeks to solidify economic and political strategies, positioning South America as a pivotal player in global alliances.
Lula highlighted that the BRICS nations account for nearly 50% of the world’s population and a similar share of global GDP. He underscored the necessity of formulating a joint document reaffirming the commitment to free trade and cooperation among nations, stating, “The BRICS are not a small thing. They have almost half of humanity.”
Additionally, Lula committed to intensifying Brazil’s partnership with Uruguay in key areas, including South American integration, Mercosur, energy transition, and the defense of democracy. He proclaimed, “We will work together on the climate agenda.”
In conjunction with his inauguration, President Orsi also engaged with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Discussions centered around technological integration between Uruguay and Colombia, with Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin noting the focus on advancing South American unity, particularly in technological development, algorithms, and artificial intelligence, as articulated by Petro.
