President Milei to Undertake Second Official Visit to Israel
President Javier Milei will visit Israel on March 23, 2024, marking his second trip since taking office. The visit aims to finalize a defense and security memorandum, emphasizing cooperation against terrorism. Milei’s administration is committed to enhancing national security, highlighted by his recent address to Congress and responses to terrorism-related tragedies.
President Javier Milei is scheduled to visit Israel at the end of March 2024 to finalize a memorandum focusing on defense and security collaboration. The visit, which is confirmed by Argentina’s Ambassador to Israel, Rabbi Axel Wahnish, is set for March 23, and will mark Milei’s second trip to the region since his presidency began in December 2023. His initial trip occurred in February 2024, where he engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and made a poignant visit to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
Accompanying President Milei during his trip will be his sister Karina Milei, who serves as the Presidential Chief-of-Staff, alongside Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein. There are expectations for Milei to meet with Netanyahu again, and there has been an invitation extended for him to address the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament. This visit highlights the strengthened ties between Argentina and Israel, especially concerning security and defense.
The principal goal of this visit is to establish a “Memorandum of Freedom and Democracy,” which aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries specifically in combating terrorism. This collaborative effort has gained momentum since President Milei assumed office. Wahnish expressed optimism about the progression of initiatives related to innovation and defense, emphasizing the shared commitment to these strategic projects.
In his recent address to Congress, President Milei articulated a stringent stance against terrorism, announcing the development of a new national security framework. He stated, “We are working on a national security law that provides tools to the national state, to our intelligence service and to our forces to pursue those who want to threaten the lives of Argentines.”
This condemnation of terrorism follows a period of mourning in Argentina after the recent death of two Israeli-Argentine children, whose bodies were returned following capture by Hamas militants in October 2023. In gratitude, Netanyahu acknowledged Milei’s leadership, which serves as a model for the global community.
During his presidency, Milei had pledged to relocate Argentina’s Embassy to Jerusalem, following the precedent established by former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2018. While this promise has yet to be realized, Wahnish has already set up his diplomatic residence in Jerusalem, indicating ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
President Javier Milei’s upcoming visit to Israel underlines Argentina’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in defense and counter-terrorism measures. With expectations to sign a memorandum of cooperation and reaffirm his administration’s dedication to national security, this trip represents a significant step in Milei’s agenda, showcasing Argentina’s active role on the international stage. Furthermore, his previous engagements in Israel emphasize the emotional and diplomatic connections shared between the two nations.
