Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Ranking High in Terrorism Deaths in 2024
In 2024, the Sahel region remained the deadliest area for terrorism, accounting for over half of global fatalities. A report recorded 7,555 deaths, with the Sahel reflecting 3,885. Burkina Faso retained the highest death toll, while Niger experienced a stark increase. The report identifies the Islamic State and JNIM as primary culprits and notes a concerning shift away from traditional security partnerships.
The Global Terrorism Index report indicates that the Sahel region continued to be the most lethal hotspot for terrorism in 2024, responsible for more than half of all terror-related mortalities worldwide. In total, the report tallied 7,555 global terror-related deaths, with the Sahel accounting for 3,885 fatalities, constituting 51% of the overall figures. Notably, five of the ten countries most impacted by terrorism are situated in the Sahel, highlighting the critical situation faced by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
For the second consecutive year, Burkina Faso emerged as the country suffering the most from terrorism, although it experienced a reduction in fatalities, dropping from 1,935 in 2023 to 1,532 in 2024. Conversely, Niger reported a significant increase in terror-related deaths, which nearly doubled to 930. The primary actors behind these violent acts have been identified as the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda-associated JNIM.
Furthermore, the report elaborates on the strategic shifts in the region, particularly noting the Sahel’s distancing from traditional Western security alliances and its departure from ECOWAS, which has facilitated the expansion of insurgent activities into coastal West Africa. This evolving geopolitical landscape poses severe challenges to regional stability and security.
The Global Terrorism Index for 2024 emphasizes the ongoing threat of terrorism in the Sahel, particularly in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The substantial fatalities underscore the need for effective counterterrorism strategies amid shifting alliances. The rise of insurgent groups in the region is concerning, necessitating concerted efforts to address these threats and restore security.
