China’s sixth-generation fighter jet prompted U.S. Air Force officials to reconsider their plans for their own aircraft at a recent defense conference. At a recent American defense conference, China’s latest sixth-generation fighter jet became a crucial topic, prompting U.S. Air Force officials to reevaluate their own plans for a similar aircraft. This discussion occurred during the annual Air & Space Forces Association’s Warfare Symposium in Colorado, where the future of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative, put on hold last summer, was on the agenda.
US Air Combat Commander Kenneth Wilsbach emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the U.S. must confront the implications of China’s advancements in air superiority. “We have some choices to make as we observe what China has produced, and we can presume we know what that’s for – for air superiority,” he remarked in a panel discussion. Wilsbach asserted that ignoring China’s developments is not a viable option for the U.S.
Additionally, Wilsbach’s remarks were fueled by the unofficial debut of two Chinese sixth-generation aircraft prototypes in December, indicating that the People’s Liberation Army might have seized an early lead in developing advanced long-range and stealth capabilities with its J-36 fighter.
