Cote d’Ivoire Ensures HIV/AIDS Care Continues Despite U.S. Aid Suspension

Cote d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Health has confirmed that care for people living with HIV/AIDS will continue uninterrupted despite the suspension of U.S. funding, as they have activated contingency plans and ensured sufficient supplies of antiretrovirals. The nation has also made significant progress in reducing mortality and prevalence rates of HIV since 2010.

In February, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which was set to provide $115 million in aid to Cote d’Ivoire in 2024. Despite this suspension, the Ivorian Ministry of Health has assured that care for individuals living with HIV/AIDS will remain fully guaranteed.

In response to concerns regarding potential shortages of antiretrovirals (ARVs), the Health Ministry confirmed that “the care for HIV/AIDS is ensured and will continue to be.” They emphasized that there is currently no disruption in the supply of ARVs, and available stocks can sustain treatment for four months.

To address the financial impact of the aid suspension, the Ivorian government activated a contingency plan to assure continuous access to treatment, testing, and support. Their initiative aims to safeguard against any potential shortages and maintain healthcare services for individuals affected by HIV.

Cote d’Ivoire, which has approximately 400,000 people living with HIV, has made notable progress in managing the epidemic, achieving a 70% decrease in mortality rates since 2010. Furthermore, the country’s prevalence rate has dropped from 2.4% to 1.8% between 2020 and 2024.
