Israeli judoka Inbar Lanir dedicated her bronze medal at the Tashkent Grand Slam to Itzik Elgarat, who was killed by Hamas. Elgarat was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz during a violent attack and his remains were returned to Israel after his murder in captivity. Lanir’s win reflects both personal and national grief, illustrating the impact of violence on communities while also showcasing the achievements of Israeli athletes.
Inbar Lanir, an Israeli judoka, dedicated her bronze medal win at the Tashkent Grand Slam in Uzbekistan to Itzik Elgarat, a victim of Hamas violence. Lanir expressed her intent to honor Elgarat’s memory by stating her determination to “fly the flag in his memory” after defeating Brazil’s Karol Gimenes in the -78 kg category. Previously, Lanir secured a silver medal at the Paris Olympics last year.
Itzik Elgarat, a 68-year-old dual Danish-Israeli citizen, was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023, from Kibbutz Nir Oz and ultimately murdered in captivity. The attack resulted in the abduction of 251 hostages and the tragic loss of 1,200 lives in southern Israel. Hamas returned Elgarat’s body to Israel on February 27, 2024, along with three other slain hostages, in exchange for 602 Palestinian prisoners during a ceasefire agreement.
After forensic examinations confirmed his murder, Elgarat was laid to rest in Israel. He is survived by two children residing in Denmark, a brother, and two sisters, one of whom, Rachel Dancyg, also survived the October 7 massacre. At the same competition, fellow Israeli judoka Raz Hershko secured fifth place in the +78 kg category, contributing to the women’s team’s overall success of three medals, including silver for Inbal Shemesh and bronzes for Timna Nelson Levy and Lanir.
Inbar Lanir’s bronze medal victory acts as a poignant tribute to Itzik Elgarat, a victim of Hamas’s brutality, reflecting the deep emotional ties within communities affected by violence. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by terrorism and the resilience exhibited by individuals in the face of tragedy. Lanir’s win, along with her teammates’ achievements, emphasizes the strength and spirit of Israeli athletes during difficult times.
