The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently expressed concern over a security breach during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the United Kingdom. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the actions of a small group of separatists and extremists, labeling them as provocative and a misuse of democratic freedoms. This incident occurred while Jaishankar was attending a session titled ‘India’s rise and role in the world’ at Chatham House.

The MEA’s official statement emphasized, “We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of EAM to the UK.” In addition to condemning the actions of the demonstrators, the MEA expected the British government to fulfill its diplomatic responsibilities in handling such situations.

During his visit, Jaishankar addressed various important international issues, including comments on the trade relations with the United States. He noted, “We see a president and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multipolarity, and that is something that suits India,” when discussing the tariffs initiated by President Trump.

In regards to trade negotiations, Jaishankar mentioned that Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in Washington working on a bilateral trade agreement, building on discussions previously held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump.

Prior to his Chatham House engagement, Jaishankar met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, where he delivered warm greetings from Prime Minister Modi. The dialogue between Jaishankar and Starmer included discussions on bilateral cooperation and the UK’s stance on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The MEA’s condemnation of the security breach during Jaishankar’s UK visit highlights the expectation for host nations to maintain diplomatic safety and order. Jaishankar’s discussions emphasized the significance of international cooperation and trade relations, reflecting India’s strategic interests on the global stage. The incident demonstrates the challenges faced by dignitaries during international engagements while underscoring the importance of safeguarding diplomatic interactions.
