Saudi Arabia Hosts Peace Talks with Ukraine and Advances Cultural Initiatives
Steve Witkoff, special envoy for President Trump, is organizing talks with Ukraine for peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia. Upcoming discussions aim to establish a ceasefire framework post acrimonious talks. Concurrently, Saudi Arabia announced an International Lexicography Conference, inaugurated a Water Taxi project, initiated humanitarian programs during Ramadan, and enhanced worship services through the Tawakkalna app, all emphasizing cultural and infrastructural advancement.
In Washington, Steve Witkoff, special envoy to US President Donald Trump, announced ongoing discussions with Ukraine regarding a framework for a peace agreement aimed at ending hostilities with Russia. A meeting between US and Ukrainian representatives is scheduled for the following week in Saudi Arabia, likely in Riyadh or Jeddah. These discussions follow a tumultuous meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the subsequent resumption of dialogue on a revenue-sharing minerals deal.
President Trump reported during a speech to Congress that he received a letter from Zelensky expressing readiness for negotiations. Witkoff emphasized the goal of the upcoming Saudi meeting: “I think the idea is to get down a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire as well.”
Meanwhile, in Riyadh, the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language announced the fourth International Conference on Lexicography scheduled for October 2025. The two-day event, with support from culture minister Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, will focus on collaboration between linguistic institutions worldwide.
The conference aims to enhance dictionary development, explore modern methodologies driven by technology, and reinforce Saudi Arabia’s leadership in promoting the Arabic language. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, secretary-general of the academy, stated, “The conference reflects our commitment to advancing the lexicographic industry by exchanging expertise.”
In Jeddah, the Water Taxi project was officially launched by Mayor Saleh Al-Turki, enhancing transport infrastructure along coastal areas. The first phase links the Jeddah Yacht Club, Al-Balad, and Obhur, with future expansion planned. Mayor Al-Turki remarked on the initiative’s alignment with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
The Jeddah Water Taxi operates daily, featuring two boats accommodating 94 and 55 passengers. An application is available for users, allowing for easier travel and accessibility, including provisions for individuals with disabilities.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs initiated a program to distribute dates and iftar meals across Indonesia, Albania, and Jordan. These programs will benefit tens of thousands during Ramadan, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian commitment.
The Tawakkalna app enhances worship during Ramadan, offering services like Qur’an reading, prayer times, and charity donations. It provides over 650 government services to improve citizens’ quality of life, aligning with the Vision 2030 objectives.
Lastly, the Grand Mosque authority introduced a new service for pilgrims exiting Ihram, allowing hair cutting at designated locations. This service enhances the Umrah experience and underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to providing quality services for pilgrims.
Overall, these initiatives are part of broader efforts to enhance international cooperation, improve transport, and support cultural and religious activities within Saudi Arabia, reflecting the nation’s commitment to progress and hospitality.
In summary, efforts by the United States to facilitate peace discussions with Ukraine, advancements in Saudi Arabia’s lexicography industry, the inauguration of transportation projects, and the launch of humanitarian initiatives during Ramadan highlight the region’s commitment to fostering international relations, cultural development, and public service improvements. Continued emphasis on technology integration, humanitarian assistance, and infrastructural enhancement underscores a forward-looking approach aligning with strategic visions, such as Saudi Vision 2030, aiming for regional stability and cultural enrichment.
