United States to Repatriate Undocumented Bangladeshi Nationals

The US has informed Bangladesh about repatriating undocumented citizens as part of a new immigration policy by President Trump, though the number of such individuals is small and this is not a policy targeting Bangladesh specifically.

The United States is preparing to repatriate undocumented Bangladeshi nationals as part of a broader immigration policy initiated by President Donald Trump. The US Embassy in Dhaka recently communicated this decision to Bangladeshi authorities, as confirmed by officials in the home affairs ministry.

An inter-ministerial meeting was convened on March 5, led by Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, to discuss the particulars of the repatriation process. Officials indicated that the number of undocumented Bangladeshis residing in the United States is relatively low and emphasized that this policy is not targeted specifically at Bangladesh.

Historically, the US has repatriated undocumented Bangladeshi citizens, as noted by officials. The new executive order, which was part of Trump’s commitment made during his election campaign, was issued on January 20 and facilitates the deportation of undocumented immigrants. While a majority of undocumented migrants are from Mexico and South America, repatriation efforts for Indian migrants have already commenced.

In summary, the United States has announced plans to repatriate undocumented Bangladeshi citizens, aligning with the immigration policy established by President Trump. While the number of Bangladeshis in this category is not substantial, the repatriation process is a continuation of previous efforts and underscores the broader context of immigration reform within the US.
