China’s Stance on Fentanyl and Global Governance Amid U.S. Pressure
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China will counter U.S. pressure regarding the fentanyl crisis. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to address its own issues while advocating for cooperation. On Friday, China declared its intention to “resolutely counter” United States pressure regarding fentanyl, portraying itself as a stable global leader amidst geopolitical challenges. In response to the U.S. imposing an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports due to the ongoing fentanyl crisis, China emphasizes the need for Washington to address its internal issues rather than exert external pressure.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that the U.S. must independently tackle the fentanyl crisis, asserting that “if one side blindly exerts pressure, China will resolutely counter that.” He emphasized that a cooperative dynamic remains possible, despite existing tensions, but made it clear that it is improbable for the U.S. to suppress China while maintaining favorable relations with it.
Wang criticized the imposition of tariffs, noting that the U.S. should appreciate the assistance China has provided in tackling fentanyl issues over the years. He confidently addressed U.S.-China technological competition, suggesting that obstacles lead to innovation and breakthroughs.
Regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Wang expressed China’s commitment to facilitate a “fair, lasting and binding peace agreement” acceptable to all involved parties. In addition, Wang urged countries in the Global South to fortify their voices in global governance amid U.S. pressures, warning that prioritization of national interests could lead to chaos. He called for major powers to uphold their international obligations responsibly, rather than pursuing self-serving agendas that may exploit smaller nations.
