EU and Member States’ Solidarity with Ukraine on Invasion Anniversary
On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, EU Ambassadors in Zambia demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine, emphasizing the support for its sovereignty and the need for a just peace. The op-ed acknowledged the ongoing hardships faced due to the war, including humanitarian crises and cultural identity challenges, while calling for international cooperation and Ukraine’s involvement in future negotiations.
On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Karolina Stasiak, the EU Ambassador to Zambia, alongside Ambassadors from EU Member States including the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, and Sweden, reaffirmed their support for Ukraine via social media and a joint op-ed published in prominent Zambian newspapers.
The op-ed, titled “For a Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine”, reminds readers that the invasion, which began on February 24, 2022, has lasted three years; contrary to Russian expectations, Ukraine has staunchly defended its sovereignty against significant adversity. The invasion has led to widespread devastation across Ukraine, including the destruction of key infrastructure and resulting in civilian casualty, thereby creating a dire humanitarian crisis with millions displaced.
Amidst the conflict, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova on charges related to the illegal forced relocation of Ukrainian children, recognized as a war crime. Moreover, nations relying on Ukrainian grain have faced challenges due to Russia’s aggressive military actions, with African countries bearing a significant brunt; however, Ukraine continues to provide essential food aid, including to Zambia.
The op-ed notes that European nations have experienced similar historical aggressions, fostering a deep commitment to pacifying conflict and supporting Ukraine, not just for its own sovereignty, but as a representative struggle for all independent nations. It also addresses disinformation propagated about the Ukrainian identity, emphasizing the legacy of oppression faced throughout history and reiterating Ukraine’s sovereignty and cultural identity.
The authors evoke reflections on historical injustices regarding national sovereignty and express support for a rules-based international order, underscoring the importance of institutions such as the United Nations in maintaining peace through international law. The piece asserts the necessity for Ukraine to have a voice in future negotiations, emphasizing, “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine!” as a rallying call for its rightful place at the negotiating table.
The collective message from the EU and Member States highlights unwavering support for Ukraine, recognizing the immense challenges posed by the ongoing war and the importance of maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty. The op-ed serves to remind the global community of the significant historical precedents of aggression, the continuous need for a rules-based international order, and the necessity of including Ukraine in discussions about its future. Ultimately, the call for a just and lasting peace reverberates as a central theme advocating for self-determination and independence for all nations.
