India Views Trump Administration’s Policies as Favourable for Bilateral Relations
S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, emphasizes that many priorities of the Trump administration favor India, particularly in energy policies and bilateral trade agreements. He notes the strategic importance of multipolarity and clarifies India’s stance on relations with China and its role in global conflicts, advocating for direct negotiations and humanitarian efforts.
During a recent event at Chatham House in London, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted that many priorities of the Trump administration are advantageous for India. His comments were made amid President Trump’s impending reciprocal tariffs set to take effect on April 2, raising concerns about potential trade wars impacting the global economy.
Jaishankar emphasized that factors such as the Trump administration’s commitment to stable energy prices, development focus, technological advancements, and collaborative connectivity align with India’s interests. He remarked on the open discussions that occurred during Prime Minister Modi’s previous visit to the U.S., indicating progress on a bilateral trade agreement.
He pointed out that the U.S. shift towards multipolarity is beneficial for India, reflecting promises for enhanced cooperation. Jaishankar further clarified that the BRICS nations do not collectively aim to replace the U.S. dollar for trade, acknowledging that India has no current policy to undertake such a shift.
In addition, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening the international economic system in partnership with the U.S., while also emphasizing the importance of internationalizing the Indian rupee for trade and investment purposes.
Regarding relations with China, Jaishankar expressed India’s desire for mutual respect and recognition of interests, particularly following the disengagement of forces in the Ladakh sector. He confirmed ongoing discussions to create a stable relationship, including the revival of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and management of trans-border rivers.
Jaishankar indicated that India’s role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is limited, advocating for direct negotiations between the two nations while recognizing India’s involvement in facilitating discussions around humanitarian efforts.
On the Israel-Hamas conflict, he stressed the importance of Middle Eastern countries and the U.S. in pursuing lasting solutions, given India’s significant interests in the region. He called for an immediate focus on humanitarian law and a two-state solution while condemning terrorism.
