Zimbabwe Seeks BRICS Membership Amid Strengthened Ties with Russia
Zimbabwe’s Foreign Minister Amon Murwira visited Moscow to discuss bilateral relations with Russia, focusing on trade, education, and economic cooperation. He confirmed Zimbabwe is working towards BRICS membership, fulfilling necessary application requirements. Lavrov emphasized Russia’s support, including scholarships for Zimbabwean students and upcoming collaborative summits.
During his visit to Moscow, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, engaged in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Post-meeting, Lavrov affirmed that the bilateral relations are grounded in equality and mutual respect, stressing the importance of enhancing trade and economic cooperation in fields such as geology, mineral exploitation, energy, agriculture, and technology.
Lavrov highlighted Russia’s commitment to Zimbabwean education by offering 125 scholarships annually for students to study in Russia, indicating a readiness to increase this number. He also announced future events, including the third Russia-Africa summit in 2026 and the second ministerial meeting of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in 2025.
Minister Murwira acknowledged the strong political relations between Zimbabwe and Russia while expressing aspirations for growth in economic collaboration. When queried about Zimbabwe’s aspirations to join BRICS, Murwira indicated that the country is actively working towards fulfilling the membership requirements and is awaiting a consensus response from the BRICS community. This visit marks Murwira’s inaugural trip to Moscow in his capacity as the Foreign Minister.
