Investigation Initiated in Syria Amid Human Rights Concerns in Coastal Operations
Syria’s Defence Ministry has initiated a probe into military abuses in coastal operations, with over 145 civilian deaths reported. The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported over 145 civilian casualties caused by security forces in the rural areas of Latakia, Tartus, and Hama, along with claims of serious abuses such as summary executions.
In an attempt to regain stability, the Defence Ministry and the General Security Directorate have closed roads leading to the affected coastal areas to control abuses. The agency affirmed that security personnel have been deployed in Tartus to maintain order, alongside efforts that include the confiscation of arms linked to the remnants of the former regime. Recent clashes in Latakia and Tartus have seen security forces battling armed factions loyal to the former government.
The situation has escalated following ambushes against General Security patrols in rural areas, particularly around Qardaha, which is known as the ancestral home of the Assad family. This unrest marks a significant challenge for the Syrian government post the December 8, 2024 regime changes. Concurrently, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria urged all groups to exercise caution to prevent further violence amid rising tensions.
Colonel Mustafa Knaifati, Director of the General Security Directorate in Latakia, declared that no retaliatory actions would be tolerated and that any implicated individuals, whether from the former regime or external saboteurs, would face legal consequences. Amid these developments, the Arab League has expressed deep concern regarding the violence targeting government forces and external interferences that threaten Syria’s stability.
In response to these issues, Jordan is set to host a meeting this Sunday with neighboring countries to discuss collaborative efforts against terrorism, and drug and arms trafficking. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry articulated that this gathering will focus on supporting Syria’s reconstruction while addressing border security concerns, including a commitment from Syria to tackle drug smuggling threats.
The organized meeting will involve key figures from Jordan, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, reflecting the urgency of ensuring regional stability amid the precarious conditions in Syria.
