China’s Advancements in Space Technology Raise US Concerns

China’s advancements in satellite refuelling technologies, exemplified by the Shijian-25 satellite, have led to US concerns regarding a potential gap in space capabilities. Chief Master Sergeant Ron Lerch referred to this progress as a game-changing technology, indicating China’s focused efforts in expanding its operational reach in space. In contrast, NASA’s similar project faced setbacks, emphasizing the competitive nature of space technology.

China is advancing in significant space technology, particularly in satellite refuelling capabilities, which has raised concerns in the United States about the potential closing of the technological gap. A notable development was the launch of the Shijian-25 satellite in January, which tested technologies for refuelling spacecraft in orbit, thus extending their operational lifespan. This information was corroborated by state media sources.

Chief Master Sergeant Ron Lerch, the US deputy chief of space operations for intelligence, stated that this is the first instance of China publicly announcing its capability to conduct refuelling and servicing of satellites, describing it as a “game-changing technology.” Lerch remarked at a Chatham House event in London that China is actively seeking to enhance their capabilities at altitudes of up to 36,000 km (22,400 miles) above Earth, indicating a substantial concern for their operational capabilities in space.

US aerospace firm Northrop Grumman became the pioneer in satellite refuelling, successfully extending the operational life of satellites by five years in 2019. In contrast, NASA had previously pursued a similar project, which was ultimately canceled due to considerable technical challenges, budget overruns, and scheduling issues.
