El Salvador Shuts Down Bitcoin-Funded Pet Hospital Following Animal Welfare Scandal

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has announced the closure of Chivo Pets, the country’s only pet hospital, due to a scandal involving animal neglect at a municipal shelter. Following alarming reports of mistreatment, Bukele emphasized the need for better management of animal shelters, pledging funding to support specialized organizations in animal welfare.

The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has announced the closure of the nation’s only pet hospital, Chivo Pets, funded by a Bitcoin trust, due to a welfare scandal. This decision comes after allegations of negligence and mistreatment of dogs at a shelter run by the San Salvador municipality that has been reported to experience severe issues.

On Facebook, President Bukele expressed his dismay over the conditions observed at the Ilopango shelter and stated, “In light of the unfortunate situation experienced by numerous animals,… we will close the veterinary hospital.” Buoyed by around four million dollars from Bitcoin funds, Chivo Pets had been launched in February 2022 to improve animal welfare.

The president criticized both the Animal Welfare Institute (IBA) and Polipet for failing to address the problems at the shelter, emphasizing, “It is evident that… the necessary actions to prevent this problem were not taken.” He shared the community’s sorrow over the suffering of defenseless animals and condemned the incompetence of the public officials involved.

To enhance animal welfare, Bukele urged the transfer of municipal shelter management to experienced organizations. He promised to allocate three million dollars monthly to support these specialized entities, indicating a commitment to better animal welfare practices moving forward.

In summary, President Nayib Bukele’s decision to close the Chivo Pets veterinary hospital arises from a serious welfare scandal involving neglect at a local shelter. His calls for reform in animal shelter management reflect a commitment to improving conditions for animals in El Salvador, along with a significant financial commitment to support specialized welfare organizations.
