Rubio to Facilitate U.S.-Ukraine Talks in Saudi Arabia and Attend G7 Meeting
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will engage in U.S.-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing swift peace efforts in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Concurrently, he will meet with Saudi officials to strengthen relations. Following these discussions, Rubio will attend the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada, where commitments to support Ukraine will be reaffirmed.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to arrive in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday to engage in discussions about U.S.-Ukraine relations as President Donald Trump seeks to facilitate a swift resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During his visit, Rubio will also meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud to further U.S.-Saudi interests and enhance their bilateral relationship, as stated by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
The State Department indicated that Rubio emphasized President Trump’s commitment to achieving a rapid end to the war during a recent conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia, followed by a diplomatic and military delegation from Ukraine, led by Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, who will engage in further discussions with U.S. officials.
Rubio will participate in the talks alongside National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and special envoy Steve Witkoff, who noted that the objective is to establish a framework for a peace agreement and achieve an initial ceasefire. These U.S.-Ukraine discussions come three weeks after U.S. officials’ meetings with Russian representatives in Riyadh. Ukraine has expressed its commitment to constructive dialogue with the U.S. and aims to finalize necessary decisions and actions moving forward.
Foreign Minister Zelenskyy asserted Ukraine’s goal for peace since the onset of the war, stating that practical proposals have been presented and stressing the critical need for swift and effective action. Following his Saudi Arabia visit, Rubio will head to Charlevoix, Canada, for the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers’ meeting from March 12 to 14.
G7 foreign ministers, in a collective statement after their discussions at the Munich Security Conference in February, reaffirmed their dedication to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine and the importance of establishing robust security assurances. The statement also indicated that any further sanctions on Russia should be contingent upon genuine efforts from Moscow to end the conflict.
In conclusion, Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s upcoming discussions in Saudi Arabia emphasize the U.S. commitment to resolving the Russia-Ukraine war swiftly. With meetings between U.S. officials and Ukrainian representatives, the focus remains on establishing a pathway towards peace and security for Ukraine. Following these talks, Rubio will participate in the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, reinforcing international support for Ukraine’s stability and security.
