Strengthening the China-Cambodia Partnership: Key Discussions Between Xi Jinping and Hun Sen

On December 3, 2024, President Xi Jinping of China engaged in discussions with Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the President of the Cambodian People’s Party and President of the Senate, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the robust friendship between China and Cambodia, aiming to enhance this relationship in accordance with the mutual interests of their peoples.
During the meeting, President Xi emphasized that China views Cambodia as a priority in its diplomatic efforts. He expressed readiness to collaborate on establishing a high-quality community with a shared future, highlighting three key areas for cooperation: mutual support, deepened exchanges for common development, and opportunities for new collaborative efforts. Both nations will focus on solidifying their partnership to safeguard sovereignty and promote joint development.
Xi Jinping pointed out the current global challenges and changing dynamics that affect international relations. He reiterated China’s commitment to support Cambodia’s involvement in global and regional affairs, underscoring the importance of ASEAN’s strategic autonomy. Both countries aim to collaborate more closely, addressing various risks and promoting peace and development in the Global South.
In his address, Samdech Techo Hun Sen acknowledged the historical significance of Cambodia-China relations, expressing gratitude for China’s support in Cambodia’s development. He reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to the One-China principle and the strengthened partnership with China. Hun Sen emphasized the importance of deepening political trust, enhancing practical cooperation across fields, and fostering cultural exchanges to benefit both peoples.
Notably, leaders Cai Qi and Wang Yi also participated in the discussions, signifying the importance of this diplomatic meeting between the two countries as they seek to further enhance their bilateral relationship and cooperation on international platforms.
