China Reinforces its Commitment to Zimbabwe’s Healthcare Development

China has reiterated its commitment to enhancing cooperation with Zimbabwe, marking 40 years of the China Medical Teams’ operations. The 21st team has successfully treated over 14,000 patients and has established vital medical training centers, while the incoming 22nd team seeks to build on this legacy. The partnership also spans several sectors beyond healthcare, emphasizing the ongoing collaboration between the nations.

During a reception, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Ding commended the commitment of Chinese medical professionals in Zimbabwe, remarking that the teams demonstrate “fearlessness in the face of hardship, readiness to dedicate, commitment to saving lives, and boundless love.”

The gathering also honored the 21st China Medical Team, which received medals from the Zimbabwean government for successfully completing their mission, while welcoming the incoming 22nd team. Arriving in March 2023, the 21st team delivered exceptional medical care at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and engaged in outreach initiatives, assisting over 14,000 patients with free medical services.

Furthermore, the team has played a critical role in strengthening Zimbabwe’s healthcare capacity by establishing important training facilities. This includes the Telemedicine Centre, the First-Aid Training Centre, and the Clinical Skills Training Centre, all of which have trained over 1,000 local healthcare providers, enhancing medical knowledge and patient care.

Reflecting on the mission’s achievements, Captain Tan highlighted the team’s swift adaptation and collaboration with Zimbabwean colleagues, stating they provided high-quality services to nearly 8,000 patients within a year. He noted the introduction of advanced technologies and the establishment of healthcare training centers as significant accomplishments during their tenure.

Incoming team leader Zheng Xingyou expressed enthusiasm for continuing the legacy of the previous team, stating that their group consists of ten distinguished associate professors with extensive clinical experience. He conveyed confidence that their team’s contributions would significantly benefit Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector with support from the embassy and local partners.

Zimbabwe’s Health and Child Care Deputy Minister Sleiman Kwidini expressed gratitude to China for its enduring medical assistance, emphasizing that the teams have consistently delivered quality healthcare, even in remote areas.
