China’s Universities Enhance Enrolment to Strengthen AI and Strategic Talent Development
China’s top universities are expanding enrolment to meet national strategic needs, focusing on artificial intelligence and other critical fields. This effort follows significant developments by AI startup DeepSeek. Peking University, Renmin University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are among the institutions enhancing capacity to nurture STEM talent, aligning with China’s plans to build a powerful education system by 2035.
Several leading universities in China are planning to increase their undergraduate enrolment slots to align with what they term “national strategic needs” and to foster talent within critical fields such as artificial intelligence (AI). This strategic move follows the rollout of AI courses influenced by the AI startup DeepSeek, which has recently drawn significant attention for developing advanced AI models at considerably lower costs compared to their U.S. counterparts.
DeepSeek’s emergence has been characterized as a “Sputnik moment” for China, showcasing the effectiveness of Beijing’s substantial investments in cultivating a robust domestic talent pool in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This initiative is further supported by new U.S. visa restrictions on Chinese students, which have led to a heightened focus on homegrown capabilities in AI.
Peking University announced it would add 150 undergraduate places by 2025, primarily in areas deemed of “national strategic importance,” including information science and technology, engineering, and clinical medicine. Likewise, Renmin University plans to incorporate over 100 additional spots in fields focused on AI to propel innovation.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is set to introduce 150 new positions that concentrate on essential industries and cutting-edge technologies, particularly in AI, integrated circuits, biomedicine, healthcare, and new energy technologies. The push towards expanding educational opportunities aligns with China’s national agenda to become a “powerful education nation” by 2035, aimed at enhancing educational development and fostering innovation.
