Saudi Arabia to Host US-Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Ongoing Conflict
Saudi Arabia will host US-Ukraine talks aimed at resolving the conflict with Russia. The meeting follows a recent dispute in the White House among Ukrainian and American leaders. Key officials from both countries are involved, with Russia excluded from the discussions. The talks focus on establishing a foundation for peace and security.
Saudi Arabia is preparing to host diplomatic talks on Tuesday between the United States and Ukraine, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. This follows a recent confrontation involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, former President Donald Trump, and US Vice-President JD Vance at the White House on February 28, as reported by News.Az.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia has been advocating for the nation as a neutral ground for peace negotiations. The foreign ministry confirmed that the talks will be held in Jeddah, a Red Sea port city, and reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to a “lasting peace to end the Ukrainian crisis.” Over the past three years, Saudi Arabia has conducted numerous meetings on this issue, underscoring their diplomatic efforts.
President Zelensky stated that Ukraine remains committed to collaborating with partners who share the desire for peace. He described the ongoing preparations for the meeting in Saudi Arabia as a significant step toward enhancing security in Europe and with American allies. Zelensky will be accompanied by key advisors, including his Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the US delegation.
The state department emphasized that President Trump is focused on concluding the war promptly and that mutual steps are essential for achieving sustainable peace. Notably, Russia has not been invited to these discussions, which are deemed crucial for establishing a joint US-Ukrainian stance that could later be presented to Moscow.
The earlier meeting in February witnessed an intense exchange, where President Trump criticized President Zelensky, accusing him of risking global conflict. Reports suggest that Zelensky left the White House without finalizing a deal that would provide the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. This deal was anticipated to secure continued military assistance crucial for Ukraine’s defense against the ongoing Russian aggression that commenced in February 2022.
In conclusion, the anticipated US-Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia represent a strategic diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict with Russia. Under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s facilitation, these talks aim to build consensus among Ukrainian and American leadership while excluding Russia. The involvement of key officials from both nations highlights the seriousness of these negotiations and the urgency for achieving sustainable peace in the region.
