Trump Administration Forecasts Significant Progress in Ukraine Talks in Saudi Arabia
The Trump administration anticipates significant progress in upcoming talks with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. Key issues include security, territorial adjustments, and intelligence sharing. U.S. officials are assessing Ukraine’s willingness to concede to Russia for peace, amid recent frustrations expressed by President Trump over Ukraine’s situation.
The United States administration, under President Donald Trump, anticipates significant advancements in discussions with Ukraine, which are scheduled to occur on March 11 in Saudi Arabia. Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, expressed optimism regarding the outcome of these negotiations, stating, “I think that we’re going over there with an expectation that we’re going to make substantial progress.”
During this meeting, critical topics such as security protocols for Ukraine and territorial adjustments will be addressed. Additionally, Witkoff noted the importance of discussing intelligence sharing, asserting that the U.S. has not ceased any intelligence assistance necessary for Ukraine’s defensive needs. He expressed hope regarding Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s potential return to the U.S. to finalize the minerals deal.
Prior reports indicated that the U.S. officials’ goals for the meeting include evaluating Ukraine’s readiness to make concessions to Russia in pursuit of peace. In recent statements, Trump has shown frustration with Ukraine’s situation, suggesting they need to engage with Russia more urgently. Recently, Trump highlighted the “just about” resumption of intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
On March 9, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Jeddah to participate in these discussions alongside key Ukrainian officials, including Andrii Yermak, and is expected to be joined by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Witkoff.
