On Saturday, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador announced the closure of the country’s sole Bitcoin-funded pet hospital, Chivo Pets, following a serious welfare scandal. The facility, inaugurated in February 2022, will shut down due to severe negligence, with reports indicating mistreatment and abandonment of dogs at a municipal shelter managed by San Salvador.

President Bukele made the announcement via Facebook, expressing concern over the distressing conditions faced by animals at an abandoned shelter in Ilopango. He acknowledged the role of Bitcoin trust funds, approximately four million dollars, that contributed to the establishment of Chivo Pets and emphasized that the hospital’s closure was unavoidable given the circumstances.

In his statement, President Bukele criticized the lack of action from both the Animal Welfare Institute (IBA) and Polipet, highlighting a significant failure to prevent the troubling incidents at the shelter. He expressed his empathy for the suffering animals and condemned the incompetence of public officials responsible, stating that it is outrageous for such suffering to stem from their negligence.

Furthermore, to improve the management of municipal animal shelters, President Bukele urged all municipalities to transfer their operations to specialized organizations focused on animal welfare. He pledged financial support of three million dollars monthly to facilitate this transition, underscoring his commitment to improving animal welfare in the country.
