Bangladesh Deems India’s Recent Comments as Unwarranted Interference

Bangladesh has labeled recent remarks from New Delhi as unwarranted interference in its internal affairs. The foreign ministry spokesperson articulated the need for mutual respect between the nations, highlighting ongoing discussions related to border security and national sovereignty. The statements imply a commitment to fostering friendly relations while addressing concerns of violence and political stability in the context of bilateral engagements.

On March 13, 2025, Bangladesh officially responded to recent statements from New Delhi, characterizing them as “unwarranted” interference in its domestic matters. Foreign ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam conveyed this during a weekly briefing, highlighting that comments made by India’s External Affairs Ministry (MEA) on Bangladesh’s elections and law and order were viewed as misrepresentations that do not reflect the current situation in Bangladesh.

Alam emphasized that Bangladesh considers these issues to be completely internal and that the remarks from New Delhi constitute unwarranted interference. He articulated the country’s commitment to upholding national sovereignty and emphasized the importance of mutual respect between Bangladesh and India.

The MEA spokesman, Randhir Jaiswal, had previously remarked on March 7 about India’s concerns regarding the law and order situation in Bangladesh, suggesting it was worsened by the release of violent extremists. Alam expressed hopes that Indian authorities would avoid making similar statements in the future, referencing ongoing bilateral relations based on understanding and trust.

In the context of military and border relations, Alam noted that a recent four-day Director General-level meeting took place in New Delhi, where discussions focused on reducing border killings of Bangladeshi citizens to zero. He indicated that both nations agreed on various matters, including the construction of barbed wire fences and enhanced border surveillance to mitigate misunderstandings and illegal crossings.

In summary, Bangladesh has firmly rebutted recent comments from India regarding its internal affairs, deeming them unwarranted and inappropriate. The government’s emphasis on sovereignty reflects its desire to maintain respectful diplomatic relations with India. Furthermore, ongoing bilateral engagements indicate a commitment to addressing border security issues while fostering constructive dialogue between the two nations.
