Experts in Cambodia are praising China’s people-centered democracy for its effectiveness in addressing social concerns and enhancing well-being. They emphasize that each nation’s democracy should be evaluated on its suitability to its unique context and ability to safeguard citizens’ interests.

At a recent seminar in Phnom Penh, experts praised China’s democracy, highlighting its effectiveness in enhancing people’s well-being through a people-centered approach. Lau Vann, Vice President of the Cambodia-China Friendship Association, stated that China’s form of democracy prioritizes the people’s needs and is particularly well-suited to Chinese conditions. He emphasized that the effectiveness of this democracy should be gauged by the peace, stability, development, and quality of life experienced by the populace.

Lau Vann referred to China’s “two sessions” as a prime example of whole-process people’s democracy, where citizens participate in law-based elections and governance. Chea Munyrith, president of the Cambodian Chinese Evolution Researcher Association, supported this view, asserting that this democratic framework yields genuine benefits to the people.

Munyrith noted that each nation’s democracy is unique and must be assessed based on its success in safeguarding citizens’ interests. He remarked that the Chinese-style democracy, being people-centered, facilitates effective engagement in resolving societal issues. Liu Zhanguo from the China Foundation for Peace and Development emphasized that the representatives in China’s “two sessions” advocate for diverse opinions from various sectors, indicating a comprehensive democratic engagement.

Wu Chuanbing, a counselor at the Chinese embassy in Cambodia, asserted that examining a country’s democratic framework requires understanding its unique context. He stressed the importance of respecting different global civilizations and a nation’s right to elect its democratic path, firmly opposing any external interference under the guise of promoting democracy and human rights.
