Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has requested Egyptian President Al-Sisi’s assistance in negotiating the release of Nepali hostage Bipin Joshi, who was taken by Hamas on October 7. During their discussion, the leaders also addressed climate change initiatives, including Nepal’s upcoming Sagarmatha Sambad forum, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal engaged in a telephone conversation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, emphasizing Nepal’s request for assistance in securing the release of Bipin Joshi. Joshi has been a hostage of Hamas militants since October 7, 2023. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for Egypt’s mediation efforts regarding the Gaza ceasefire and urged continued diplomatic actions for Joshi’s release.

President Al-Sisi responded by assuring that Egypt would prioritize actions to facilitate the release of all remaining hostages, including Joshi, during the second phase of the exchange process. The current status of Joshi, a Nepali youth involved in a “Learn and Earn” agricultural program, is unclear, as he was abducted from Alumim Kibbutz amid the larger context of 251 hostages taken during the Hamas assault.

In addition to discussing hostage negotiations, President Al-Sisi commended Nepal’s initiative to host the Sagarmatha Sambad. This international climate change and sustainability dialogue is scheduled from May 16 to 18 in Kathmandu. The Prime Minister extended an invitation for Al-Sisi to participate in this forum, which aims to gather 160 to 200 foreign delegates and focus on the theme, “Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity.”

Prime Minister Oli underscored the necessity of global collaboration in tackling climate change and expressed optimism that Egypt’s involvement would enhance the dialogue. Furthermore, the discussions encompassed the strengthening of bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and potential high-level visits between the two nations.

The telephone conversation between Prime Minister Oli and President Al-Sisi highlights Nepal’s urgent call for assistance in the release of Bipin Joshi from Hamas captivity. The dialogue also pointed to broader issues, including climate action and bilateral relations, with preparations underway for the Sagarmatha Sambad in Kathmandu. Both leaders indicated a commitment to diplomatic efforts and international cooperation in addressing pressing global challenges.
