Algeria Becomes Major Importer of Brazilian Beef, Tripling Imports in 2024
Algeria has tripled its beef imports from Brazil, ranking as the fourth-largest destination for Brazilian beef in early 2024. This surge led to increased revenue and marked Algeria’s significant growth in the beef import market. Meanwhile, Brazil’s overall beef exports show a slight decline in volume but an increase in revenue during the same period.
In recent developments, Algeria has significantly increased its beef imports from Brazil, becoming the fourth-largest recipient of Brazilian beef exports. Data from the initial two months of the current year, published by the Brazilian beef industry group Abrafrigo, indicates that Algeria imported 15,900 tonnes of beef, generating USD 85.4 million in revenue. This figure represents a remarkable rise of 199% in volume and 254% in value compared to the same timeframe in 2024.
Algeria has shown substantial advancement as a key importer of Brazilian beef, rising from the 12th position last year to the fourth this year following the first two months. In January, Algeria had surpassed other countries, maintaining its position thereafter. Major destinations for Brazilian beef exports during this period included China, the United States, and Chile, with notable increases in sales also observed in Italy and Libya.
Overall, Brazilian beef exports during January and February totaled 456,100 tonnes, reflecting a 2% decline in volume year-over-year, yet a 12% rise in revenue, amounting to USD 2.066 billion. In February, exports of both fresh and processed beef decreased by 6% in volume to 217,100 tonnes, while revenue grew by 12.6% to USD 1.038 billion.
Additionally, Algeria’s recent membership in the BRICS Bank indicates its growing prominence on the global stage and reflects a strategic focus on developing its trade relationships, particularly in the agricultural sector.
In summary, Algeria has rapidly ascended in the ranks of Brazilian beef importers, with a tripling of imports in the early months of the year. The country’s strategic investments and trade policies are reflected in its impressive growth, significantly impacting the beef export market. Despite a overall slight decline in Brazilian beef exports, revenue has seen a positive trajectory, indicating robust demand in various international markets.
