On March 17, 2023, China conducted military exercises in proximity to Taiwan, which it claimed were aimed at penalizing Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te for advocating actions perceived as “separatism.” In reaction to these exercises, Taiwan labeled China as a provocateur.
The People’s Republic of China has intensified military and political actions against Taiwan in recent years, maintaining its stance of possibly employing force to gain control over the self-governing island. According to reports by News.Az referencing foreign media, this posture signifies escalating tensions in the region.
In the latest military maneuvers, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reported that China engaged in “joint combat readiness patrols” comprising two sorties, deploying 54 warplanes, including J-10 jets and drones. These aircraft traversed various areas surrounding Taiwan, prompting the island’s air and naval forces to remain vigilant.
Significantly, 42 of the Chinese aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial boundary separating the two entities. A spokesperson from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned that if the Lai administration continues to provoke tensions, it will only lead to its own downfall. Taiwan typically reports on such military activities by China, while the Chinese government seldom comments publicly on them.
The military exercises by China near Taiwan serve as a demonstration of its discontent with Taiwan’s leadership and perceived separatist tendencies. These actions highlight the ongoing strain in cross-strait relations and China’s commitment to exerting influence over Taiwan, potentially through military means. As tensions continue to rise, the situation remains precarious, requiring vigilant observation from both sides.
