China Ready to Rebuild Ties Following PM Modi’s Positive Remarks

China has welcomed PM Modi’s statements about the significance of India-China cooperation for global stability. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized readiness to rebuild ties and implement shared understandings, encouraging dialogue over discord. An understanding on border tensions was reached last October. Both nations aim to enhance bilateral relations while benefiting their populations and the region.

On Monday, the Chinese government expressed approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comments regarding the importance of India-China cooperation for global stability and prosperity. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning acknowledged Modi’s remarks during a media briefing and indicated China’s readiness to collaborate with India to mend and enhance bilateral relations.

Mao Ning described Modi’s comments as “positive” and emphasized that China is willing to implement shared understandings established by Modi and President Xi Jinping. The 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic relations serves as a pivotal moment for enhancing exchanges and cooperation while fostering sustainable development of bilateral ties.

In the past, both nations have worked diligently to adhere to leadership agreements, bolstering exchanges and achieving numerous positive outcomes. Notably, an understanding was reached last October to de-escalate military tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), stemming from skirmishes in April-May 2020. This agreement was solidified post a meeting between Modi and Xi in Kazan, Russia, where they agreed to revive mechanisms aimed at resolving border disputes and restoring normalcy.

Mao reiterated that India and China share a long history devoid of conflicts, highlighting the predominantly amicable nature of their interactions over the centuries. She emphasized the necessity for the two largest developing nations to support one another for mutual success, benefiting over 2.8 billion individuals and promoting regional aspirations for peace and stability.

According to Mao, both countries must act as partners that foster each other’s success, describing this relationship as a cooperative partnership akin to a “dance for two” between the dragon and the elephant. Modi further supported this notion in his podcast comments, asserting that India prioritizes dialogue over discord to create a stable cooperative relationship.

He acknowledged that the return to normalcy along the border post his meeting with Xi is indicative of a restoration of pre-2020 conditions. Modi emphasized that cooperation between India and China is not only advantageous but crucial for global stability and prosperity, noting that while competition is natural, conflict should be avoided.

The responses from China to Prime Minister Modi’s remarks underscore a mutual aspiration to improve India-China relations, particularly in light of their shared historical context and the pressing need for cooperation in achieving global stability. The dialogues initiated and reinforced by both leaderships illustrate a commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and collaboratively. Continuous dialogue and partnership are imperative for the sustainable advancement of bilateral ties, benefiting both nations and the broader global community.
