The Taiwan Affairs Office stated that the drills serve as a warning for perceived provocations from Taiwan’s leadership.

In reaction to these military maneuvers, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported mobilizing air and naval forces to monitor the situation. They noted that a total of 54 Chinese military aircraft and drones approached the island, which prompted heightened vigilance among Taiwan’s defense forces. The unit of the Chinese military agency asserted that if the Lai administration continues its provocative stance, it could lead to severe consequences for Taiwan.

Taiwanese officials indicated that China has conducted drills near the island on a regular basis, approximately every 7-10 days, thereby attempting to normalize military operations in the region. The Mainland Affairs Council in Taiwan has condemned these actions, describing the Chinese Communist Party as a “troublemaker” and urging allied nations to curtail any expansion of China’s military threats.

Last week, President Lai accused China of intensifying its influence operations aimed at Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of countermeasures against Beijing’s efforts to exert control over the island. Additionally, Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency recently revoked the visa of a Chinese influencer who advocated for China’s military coercion against Taiwan, highlighting Taiwan’s commitment to sovereignty and security.

The military exercises conducted by China near Taiwan are framed as a punitive response to perceived separatism. Taiwan continues to bolster its defenses in light of these provocations, while its officials stress the importance of regional stability and support from allies. The tensions indicate an ongoing struggle over Taiwan’s sovereignty and China’s assertive military posturing.
