Cheang Chimann, a 45-year-old Cambodian employee, significantly transformed his life after joining the Chinese-invested PPSHV Expressway Co., Ltd. in 2022. Initially unfamiliar with expressway management, he underwent extensive training under Chinese experts, advancing from a novice to the supervisor of Stung Hav Station 172 on the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, which spans 187 kilometers.

As a father of two, Chimann stands as a testament to the successful transfer of technology and skills from Chinese professionals to local Cambodian talent. He explained, “My job is to administer the road, settle traffic accident cases, and make a claim for compensation for any damage caused to the road in any accidents. I’m happy to work here because this job has provided a better future for me.”

Beyond the administrative skills, Chimann expressed gratitude for the job that imparts lifelong benefits. He stated, “I would like to thank the expressway operator for offering me the job here, which has given me an opportunity to work with highly experienced professionals.” He highlighted the expressway as a crucial connection between Cambodia’s two economic centers, notably reducing travel time significantly.

Touch Dane, a 27-year-old toll collector, echoed Chimann’s sentiments, detailing her training in Chinese and computer skills, which further enhances her career prospects. “The company’s management has paid attention to strengthening staff’s capacities, so we have not only got jobs, but also opportunities for self-advancement,” she noted.

Another employee, Chen Ry, a 36-year-old patrol officer at the expressway, shared insights into his responsibilities and the benefits of his role. “We have gained a lot of experience in dealing with road congestion and traffic accidents because we have received training well from the company and Chinese superiors,” he remarked. He expressed that his labor conditions have greatly improved, affirming, “This expressway is very good because it helps boost economic growth in Cambodia.”

The Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, financed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation at a cost of $2 billion, marks Cambodia’s first freeway and commenced commercial operations in November 2022.
