Enhancing China-Zimbabwe Legislative Cooperation: A Meeting Summary
On March 12, Cheng Yan from the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe met with Webster Shamu, head of Zimbabwe’s Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, discussing legislative cooperation and the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025. Both expressed commitment to enhancing collaboration between their countries and legislative bodies.
On March 12, Cheng Yan, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, engaged in constructive discussions with Webster Shamu, the Chairperson of Zimbabwe’s Parliament Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The focus of their dialogue was on enhancing collaborations and exchanges between the legislative bodies of both nations. Counsellor Zhang Yi attended the meeting as well.
Cheng Yan provided an overview of recent sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, emphasizing the concept of whole-process people’s democracy in China. He noted that 2025 will mark the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between China and Zimbabwe, expressing hope for strengthened exchanges and cooperation that align with agreements established by both nations’ leaders and the outcomes of the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Webster Shamu acknowledged the enduring mutual trust and friendship between Zimbabwe and China. He emphasized the Parliament of Zimbabwe’s commitment to maintaining close relations and promoting exchanges with the NPC, underscoring their active role in fostering friendly cooperation across various sectors between the two countries.
The meeting between Cheng Yan and Webster Shamu underscores the commitment to strengthen diplomatic ties between China and Zimbabwe. Both parties expressed optimism for enhancing legislative cooperation, which is instrumental in realizing the objectives set forth by both nations’ leadership. Their dialogue highlights mutual respect and a shared vision for future bilateral exchanges.
