Mali Withdraws from Francophonie, Aligns with Regional Allies
Mali, alongside Niger and Burkina Faso, has withdrawn from the OIF, citing issues with sovereignty. This move follows a history of political turmoil, including military coups in all three nations. The OIF now faces challenges as these countries seek to redefine their international positions and alliances.
Mali, under military leadership, has officially announced its withdrawal from the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), a French-speaking international organization. This decision follows similar announcements from its regional allies, Niger and Burkina Faso. In a letter to France, Mali’s foreign ministry stated, “Mali cannot remain a member of an organisation whose actions are incompatible with constitutional principles based on the state’s sovereignty,” emphasizing its desire for autonomy.
Mali’s exit from the OIF reflects a broader regional trend as Burkina Faso and Niger similarly withdraw, signaling a shift towards assertive independence from former colonial influence and the establishment of new alliances. The geopolitical landscape in the Sahel is transforming as these countries seek to foster alternative relationships, notably with Russia, amidst ongoing political challenges.
