On Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain met with US Senator Gary C. Peters to address the spread of misinformation about Bangladesh, emphasizing the need to project the accurate situation of the country. He requested the Senator’s support to counter these narratives. The meeting, held at the State Guest House ‘Padma,’ was attended by US CDA to Bangladesh Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, as well as other senior diplomats and officials from both nations.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations in areas such as trade, investment, development cooperation, cyber security, and climate resilience. The Foreign Adviser expressed gratitude for Senator Peters’ inaugural visit to Bangladesh and updated him on government reforms under Dr. Yunus, particularly regarding the preparations for upcoming elections that aim to be “free, fair, and participatory.”

Senator Peters acknowledged these initiatives and reiterated the United States’ support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition. Both parties exchanged views on enhancing collaboration in trade, technology, and security, while addressing significant challenges, such as the Rohingya crisis. The Foreign Adviser emphasized the need for sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar and solicited US cooperation for an international conference on this issue scheduled for later this year.

Senator Peters commended Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts regarding the Rohingya population and recognized the contributions of the Bangladeshi community in Michigan and across the United States. He highlighted the necessity for deeper cooperation in tackling common challenges, particularly climate change. The meeting concluded with a commitment to reinforce the Bangladesh-U.S. partnership and explore new cooperation avenues, followed by an iftar and dinner thereafter.
